Pieter Schmits (1961) is a painter, illustrator and portraitist.

He studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.

In his free paintwork the point of focus is the layered structure of the human figure.

“Our perception is determined by factors such as lighting, perspective, interaction, a possible surprise effect. Furthermore, it is a snapshot. I try to capture some of this in my choice of image and by way of letting the painted layers unfinished.

It also provides insight into the process of painting, as it were, a look back in time”.
